Is this the menopause?

Written by Louise

I found the sun and moon data. It’s off to one side, so I need to take a much wider screenshot.

Weather 18th December 2015

It’s felt warmer today than Weather Underground suggests, which is odd. I’m usually complaining that it’s colder than the weather forecast says, so I can only think of 2 reasons why I might be feeling warmer than usual:

  1. The iron supplements are working and I’m no longer anaemic.
  2. I’m getting hot flushes.

Obviously, I want the iron supplements to work, but I’d be very happy if it’s hot flushes and I can get the menopause out of the way and stop being dependent on the depo to feel normal. I have felt the need to remove layers of clothing a few times over the last couple of days, even though the temperature – on the thermometer – is not particularly warm. Fingers crossed!

After a few attempts to get rid of this morning’s headache with B12 and folic acid, I gave in and took caffeine/ibuprofen, which is very much my first choice of painkiller at the moment. I remembered after the event that, back in the days before hormonal contraception (that would be when I was in my teens), I always used to get a headache on the 4th day of my period. Hopefully that’s what it was, and I’ll be able to return to headache free status tomorrow.

Today has been a much better day overall, with no exhaustion and no emotional turmoil, so I hope my body is settling down now. I didn’t go to town and see my doctor because I had to do a dog and cat food order, which always takes ages, and by that time it was too late. I have tentative plans to get more shopping tomorrow, though. I always try to have enough food in before Christmas to last until well after New Year, so I don’t have to face the chaos in Mercadona over Christmas.

I added a bit more B12 to the usual supplements today:

  • One Jarrow’s 5,000mcg methylB12 before breakfast
  • 8 Swanson 500mcg B12 capsules (2 after my workout, and the rest spread across the day)
  • 4 Valupak 400mcg folic acid tablets (2 before breakfast, one mid afternoon, one with dinner)
  • 2 Quest One-a-Day multivitamins with lunch
  • 2 Incite 5,000IU D3 with lunch
  • One Jarrow MK7 90mcg K2 with lunch
  • 4 Health Aid 30mg iron bisglycinate, 2 first thing in the morning and 2 last thing before bed with some orange juice to help absorption

I’m going to wait until Monday to restart the magnesium. I want to make sure my body has completely recovered from this period before I risk stressing it with anything else.

Finally got back on the cross trainer today – 7.5km in 31 minutes with 5 minutes on level ‘4’ and the rest on level ‘3’ resistance. My ankle seems to be coping well now I’m wearing my ancient running shoes, and it actually looked a bit less swollen after I finished my workout than before I started! Maybe the movement made some of the fluid around the joint drain away. (That’s a total guess and has no basis in fact whatsoever.)

Altogether, a good day.
